In the Wake of a Massacre
The aim of the research project launched in October 2016, on the 60th anniversary of the Hungarian Revolution of 1956, was to explore the events of the revolution linked to the Parliament building and Kossuth Square. Due to its political and symbolic importance, the Parliament building was ascribed a central role during the revolution and struggle for freedom.
The research has two main areas: firstly a biographical exploration of the identified victims of the massacre on Kossuth Square, and, secondly, a reconstruction of the events linked to the Parliament building between 23 October and 4 November 1956.
The research method is primarily a micro-historical approach, thanks to which a more personal historical insight is achieved as to the motivations and characters of the participants.
The scientific work is carried out by a research team working to expand the knowledge at our disposal on the deaths brought about by the massacre on 25 October 1956, as well as to explore pictorial, written and material sources.
The research findings have already contributed to developing a museum education workshop built around the massacre on 25 October 1956 and further expanding the material of the memorial and exhibition titled In memoriam 25 October 1956.
The Museum of the Hungarian Parliament calls upon members of the public to contribute any personal memorabilia, photographs, documents or objects they might have with the aim of expanding the body of knowledge about the participants and victims of the massacre on Kossuth Square on 25 October 1956, known as “bloody Thursday”.
Relatives, family members and acquaintances with information about the lives and earlier history of the 79 already identified victims of the massacre on Kossuth Square or about other, thus far unidentified persons can contact us at the phone number and email address below. Any such contribution will help us pay worthy tribute to the victims.
